I had the absolute best time last week at 1 Hotel in South Beach getting my modern-day Malibu Barbie makeover. Since I was a little girl I always loved Barbie and everything she stands for. She’s powerful, professional (I mean she’s a doctor AND an astronaut) and is always wearing the latest trends that have been custom-designed by the likes of Moschino, Roberto Cavalli, Vera Wang and Ralph Lauren.
As a blonde, I’ve always looked up to Barbie, as she proves that the “dumb blonde” theory is just that; dumb! She taught us that being successful doesn’t mean compromising our femininity, and to me, that is a huge source of empowerment.
Channeling Malibu Barbie was a total privilege. To achieve the updated take on her iconic look, I enlisted the help of Cia Maritima, Brazil’s premier swimwear company, for a suit that would pay homage to the soft blue, high neck beachwear of yesteryear. They found a reference in a striped suit that boldly addressed the colors she wore and paired it with a bright yellow wrap skirt, which is a far cry from her outdated pastel cover-up.
Next, Style Network star Martin Ormaza, from “Split Ends,” lavished me in layers of Platinum Seamless locks, while makeup artist Lara Skubic, who works alongside Ormaza and Boca Raton’s The Salon Project, gave me the perfect beachy glow.
Finally, it all came together as I sat with Ormaza on the beach, watching the waves go by. We laughed, we talked and really got to know each other. He will forever be my Malibu Ken! I’m so excited to share this episode with you and I truly hope it inspires you to find that little girl inside and play dress-up all over again.
